LECBA Board Meeting

Monday, August 11, 2014

Porky’s Restaurant

Meeting called to order by President Paul Pacholski at 6:00pm.

Motion made and seconded to waive the reading of the minutes from the last meeting as the secretary was not present.

Treasury report was presented by Don Lowther and accepted by the Board. Don requested that any outstanding expenses be submitted before September which is the accounting year end.

Paul talked about the water sampling that is being done on a volunteer basis by Captains from 5 area marinas every Monday for the OEPA and Ohio State University. The sampling area is from Maumee Bay to Kelley’s Island.

Jeff Tyson, ODNR, was the guest speaker, speaking about algae blooms and safety of eating fish caught in the algae. Testing has indicated that there are no toxins in the flesh of the fish but that entrails should not be eaten as toxins have been seen in the fish livers. Note that the toxins do get flushed from the fish's systems and do not build up in the fish.

Dave Spangler mentioned that the Toledo water treatment facility was not the cause of the 3 day water ban; this was caused by microcystin toxins from the algae blooms. Even the newest and most advanced water treatment facility could not have cleaned the toxins from the water.

Information on walleye and perch hatches for 2014 should be available at the end of the month when the August trawls are complete.

Stone Lab Day will be Monday, August 25. This is a very informative day with a tour of the facilities by Dr. Reuter. Attendees also see how samplings and trawls are done. Breakfast and lunch is provided. There is no fee for this day other than the fee to take the Miller Ferry to and from South Bass Island. If interested in attending, please contact Don Lowther at 419-260-6637 ASAP. There is room for 60 captains and guests to attend.

Rick Unger was interviewed by a reporter from the Belt Magazine out of Cleveland who wants to know the position of LECBA on commercial fishing utilizing the unused portion of sportsmen fishing quotas. Rick indicated that the quotas are a ceiling and not a goal. The Board unanimously agreed that LECBA opposes this. Commercial Fishing does not belong in the Sport Fishing arena.

Meeting adjourned at 8:30pm.
